Guwahati, June 3, 2025 —
Relentless rains have unleashed devastation across Northeast India, killing over 40 people and forcing thousands to flee their homes in what is being described as a humanitarian crisis in the making.
States like Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh are battling nature’s fury, as flash floods and landslides have wiped out roads, toppled homes, and stranded entire communities. The death toll continues to rise as rescue teams race against time.
Massive flooding has submerged low-lying areas, while landslides have cut off key roadways, making rescue operations challenging. Several bridges have collapsed, and power outages have left parts of the region in darkness.
More than 1.5 million residents in Assam alone have been affected, with emergency shelters now overcrowded. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and army units have been deployed, using helicopters and boats to evacuate people and deliver aid.
“The destruction is heartbreaking,” a senior official stated. “Entire villages are underwater. Rescue efforts are ongoing, but the conditions are extremely tough.”
The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a ‘Red Alert’, warning that heavy rainfall is expected to continue for the next two days, raising fears of further flooding and landslides.
Dramatic visuals show families clinging to rooftops, water currents sweeping away cattle, and children being carried to safety through flooded streets. Social media is flooded with desperate calls for help.
Experts say this disaster underscores the growing impact of climate change and inadequate infrastructure, as extreme weather events become more frequent and more dangerous.
