Lucknow, June 17, 2025 — In a shocking tragedy, 25 people were killed in separate lightning strike incidents across Uttar Pradesh as intense monsoon storms lashed the region on Monday.
The deadly strikes occurred in districts including Prayagraj, Kaushambi, Fatehpur, and Sultanpur, with most victims being farmers and laborers who were caught in the open during the storms. Many were either working in fields or had taken shelter under trees, which turned fatal during the lightning activity.
Officials have confirmed the rising death toll and issued a severe weather alert for the next two days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted continued heavy rainfall and thunderstorm activity across the state, urging people to remain indoors and follow safety protocols.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has offered condolences to the grieving families and announced ₹4 lakh ex-gratia compensation for each of the victims’ families. “This is a deeply saddening loss. I appeal to the public to stay alert and follow the advisories strictly,” he said in a statement.
This incident is yet another reminder of the growing impact of extreme weather events across the country. Authorities have urged the public to avoid open areas, tall trees, and metal objects during storms to minimize the risk of lightning injuries.
